There are a few things to consider before starting on your decking project. We will walk through any issues during our free initial consultation. But here are a few things you may wish to consider before we meet up.

Which is the best material?

Personal taste comes into play when choosing your ideal decking material. Most customers prefer natural wood but others are equally happy with the look of PVC and more concerned about durability, sustainability and ease of maintenance. Like most things there are pros and cons of each material.

“Like most things there are pros and cons of each material…

Wooden decking

Wood is the most popular decking material for many reasons:

  • Wood is a natural material which blends in well with all outdoor spaces
  • Wood is a sustainable resource. So if you are eco-friendly minded than this the best alternative to manmade decking
  • Wood looks great. Like your fingerprint every piece of natural wood looks unique with its own pattern, texture and hue
  • Wooden decking is cheaper than PVC or composite decking

Bear in mind that wood after long exposure to the elements eventually wood will begin to rot, warp and crack. However regular maintenance can help prolong its life expectancy.

Hardwood decking

Hardwood comes from broadleaved trees: Ipe, Balau, birch, elm, oak, teak, cherry or maple. These woods make great decking material because it is naturally durable, and doesn’t require any special treatment. Expect your hardwood decking to last at least 25 years. Hardwoods come in a variety of attractive colours.

Bear in mind hardwoods are generally more expensive than softwoods.

Softwood decking

Cedar, pine and spruce (coniferous trees) are less dense so are referred to as softwoods. Softwoods must be pre-treated with a wood preservative (a British Standards EN 335 requirement). If properly treated softwood decking will also last around 25 years. Softwood is generally cheaper than hardwood.

PVC decking

PVC decking has become an increasing popular option in recent years. Some advantages:

  • It doesn’t rot or decay, it should last a lifetime
  • Very little maintenance
  • It can be made to look like wood
  • PVC is an extremely durable material

PVC decking is significantly more expensive than wood. Also because it is a manmade material and requires chemical production, it’s less eco-friendly. However because it lasts longer the extra energy required is somewhat offset by the fact it will last longer. Some people aren’t big fans of the more uniform appearance of PVC.

Really there is no right answer, more what you feel best fits your budget and taste. We would recommend taking a look at various options online or better still going to a specialist decking supplier. Remember we are here to help so you only have to call if you have any questions, want to get a second opinion or would like to arrange a free initial appointment.

Planning permission

It’s worth also considering if you need planning permission. Although unlikely it’s best to check especially if you live in a listed building, near a boundary or in a conservation area.

We are here to professionally install your decking, ensuring it looks great and lasts for a long time.
