Fencing

Closeboard, panel, tongue and groove, larch lap panels, post and rail… Confused? Don’t worry…

Picking the right fencing can seem a little daunting. Although the style is a personal choice sometimes there are technical aspects to consider. We are happy to help. Here’s a quick overview we hope will help. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Quality materials

Not all fencing materials are created equal. We only work with quality materials, 4” x 4” fencing posts, high build quality materials supplied by quality fencing specialist suppliers. High street DIY fencing are inferior and will not last as long. We only use timber that has been pressure treated (tannalised) so you won’t need to apply any treatment yourself. Pressure treatment ensures the timber is resistant to moisture and insects. This helps preventing rot and extends the life expectancy of your fence.

We only use pressure treated timber (tannalised)…

Correct installation

The way fencing is installed also makes a big difference to how long it lasts. You may source the best quality materials, but if poorly installed it won’t won’t last long. In addition to using pressure-treated timber, we always install with a gravel board. This adds an extra layer of protection for your fence by preventing the timber from coming into contact with the ground.

Often customers purchase fencing before they phone us. If you do wish to by from a non specialist DIY shop please avoid buying 2” x 2” fencing posts as they warp and distort quickly. We are happy to discuss and supply the very best materials for you.

Some of our work

Panel fencing

This is the most popular style of fencing, you’ll often see this type of pre-built fencing in popular DIY stores. The two most common types of panel fencing are overlap and closeboard. We recommend closeboard, they are more sturdy.

We install the panel with either timber or slotted concrete posts. Choosing the support material is a personal choice, Most customers prefer the look of tiber but it’s worth bearing in mind it typically only lasts around ten years. Concrete will last many decades.

Closeboard fencing

Traditional closeboard fencing is constructed on site, from vertical feather edge boards fixed to arris rails. This provides more flexibility and the perfect solution if you need to:

  • Avoid established trees or plants
  • Require fencing on a slope as it avoids the need for ‘stepping’.

Picket fencing

Picket fencing is generally chosen for its decorative feel and homeliness. Useful for creating a boundary not a barrier.

Before installation we discuss the width and type of pickets, the shape of the tops, we’ll even provide you with a matching gate. Although timber is pressure-treated, many clients like a painted picket fence and so we’ll discuss options with you.

Trellis fencing

Square trellis and diamond lattice are the perfect way to further enhance the appearance of your new fence. We have used square trellis in the picture above.

  • A trellis topped fence provides a delicate addition to your garden enabling plants to grow through it thus integrating the fence with the garden.
  • A trellis topped fence will add can add further security to your property without making the garden feel too enclosed

Slatted screen fencing

Slatted screen also called lateral trellis will add contemporary / modern feel to your garden.

  • It can be used either as a traditional boundary fence or just as a decorative feature.
  • Sometimes used to hide sheds or bins.
  • The screens are a perfect match on top of a old brick wall and will still allow light into the garden while providing you with additional privacy.
  • We construct screens on site using to fit your specification.
  • The balance of light and privacy in a garden is often an important client requirement. We can controlled this simply by just using smaller or larger gaps.

Often constructed with hardwood and especially western red cedar timber, the screens will last a considerable length of time and will evolve and change in colour. The colour can be enhanced with a oil or stain or, as some of our clients prefer, left to allow the timber to weather naturally.

Garden gates

We can supply and install your garden gates. These can either match your existing fencing or complement the style of your garden and outdoor space.
